President Gash opened the conversation by highlighting 老司机视频鈥檚 mission-driven approach to education and announced that the University is in the final stages of planning a new Great Books Honors College, set to launch in Fall 2027, focused on deep reading and intellectual formation.
Describing Tate as an entrepreneur and education leader, President Gash discussed Tate鈥檚 work in founding the Classic Learning Test in 2015 as an alternative to the SAT and ACT, but with an emphasis on classical education, critical thinking, and engagement with foundational texts.
鈥淓ducation is not just about career preparation,鈥 Tate said. 鈥淚t鈥檚 about forming the whole person. It鈥檚 about who the student becomes.鈥
Drawing from his early experience as a teacher and college counselor, Tate explained that he began questioning how standardized testing shapes what schools prioritize.
鈥淔or better or worse,鈥 he said, 鈥渆veryone ends up teaching to the test.鈥
His solution was not to eliminate testing, but to create an assessment that reinforces deep reading and serious engagement with classic texts.
When asked what defines 鈥渢he classics,鈥 Tate said: 鈥淭hey鈥檙e the books that have withstood the test of time. They speak across generations, cultures, and centuries. There鈥檚 something powerful about handing a student a story that鈥檚 been passed down for 2,000 years and saying, 鈥楴ow it鈥檚 your turn.鈥欌
Tate shared how reading Dostoevsky鈥檚 Crime and Punishment as a young adult reshaped his understanding of literature and moral imagination. 鈥淚 didn鈥檛 know books could do that,鈥 he said. 鈥淚 didn鈥檛 know they could change you.鈥
Over the past decade, CLT has grown from 46 students taking its first exam to more than 250,000 students nationwide in 2024. Tate described the early years as 鈥渢rying to start a fire in the rain,鈥 but said momentum has accelerated as more schools and universities seek alternatives.
At the heart of his mission, Tate said, is a belief that education must aim higher than credentialing. 鈥淚f we care about the future of our country, we have to care about how we educate the next generation,鈥 he said.
Tate added that students are searching for depth. 鈥淲e are seeing a generation that wants something deeper,鈥 he explained. 鈥淭hey want truth. They want substance.鈥
The conversation also turned to artificial intelligence and technology鈥檚 impact on learning. While acknowledging rapid change, Tate expressed optimism. 鈥淎I can summarize information,鈥 he said, 鈥渂ut it can鈥檛 replace formation. It can鈥檛 replace a teacher who inspires, who models virtue, who shapes a student鈥檚 character.鈥
In closing, Gash tied the conversation to 老司机视频鈥檚 annual theme, 鈥淔or Greater Purpose.鈥 He asked Tate how he would hope to describe his life鈥檚 work one day.
Tate talked about his seasons of doubt and sacrifice over the past decade, and about the deeper meaning found in staying faithful through hardship.
鈥淭here鈥檚 something powerful about not running from pain,鈥 Tate said. 鈥淚t鈥檚 through that process that we鈥檙e formed.鈥
