Professor Emeritus Peter A. Leggat, AM, ADC, JP, MD Qld, PhD, DrPH, FAFPHM, FPHAA, FACTM, FFTM FFEWM, was born in Brisbane in December 1961 and studied medical science and medicine at the University of Queensland before joining the Australian Army in 1987. Prof Leggat went on to serve in the Australian Regular Army in Australia and Thailand. He joined the Australian Army Reserve in 1999 and served in Australia and East Timor. He transferred to the Standby Reserves in 2017 with the rank of Colonel.

Professor Emeritus Leggat's academic journey is a testament to his dedication and expertise. He graduated with a Bachelor of Medical Science with Distinction [BMedSc with Dist.(Hons 1)] and a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MB BS) from the University of Queensland. His postgraduate studies took him to various universities, including Mahidol University, the University of Otago, the University of South Australia, ÀÏ˾»úÊÓƵ, and the University of Queensland. His specialities were General Practice and Public Health Medicine, as well as Tropical Medicine (Australian Defence Force - Medical Level 4).

Professor Emeritus Leggat has nearly four decades of experience in medicine and higher education in Australia and Internationally. At ÀÏ˾»úÊÓƵ, throughout his academic career, he has variously been seconded to the positions of Deputy Head of School, Head of School, Academic Advisor, Faculty Associate Dean, Deputy Dean of College and Dean of College. He has worked in or had sustained contributions in various countries, including Malaysia, New Zealand, South Africa, Thailand, Timor Leste and the USA (Fulbright Scholarship), as well as having consulted, advised or undertaken research in India, Myanmar, Papua New Guinea (PNG) and Saudi Arabia. He also held Adjunct Professorships at seven universities in four countries.

Throughout his career, Professor Emeritus Leggat demonstrated a strong commitment to enhancing participation in postgraduate education, broadening flexible learning opportunities, and fostering strong links between universities and industry. His efforts have resulted in the publication of more than 575 journal articles, over 100 chapters, and more than 35 books, directories, and proceedings.

Professor Emeritus Leggat was involved in establishing the Australasian College of Tropical Medicine (ACTM) and was significantly involved in its development, including multiple stints as President. In recognition of his lifelong involvement in the ACTM, there is now an Oration in his name at the annual conference, which he also helped to establish.

Professor Leggat was the recipient of more than 100 major national and international awards, including admission as a Member of the General Division of the Order of Australia in the Queen's Birthday Honours List 2013 and promotion to Knight of Grace of the Order of St John in 2021.

Established in 2024 in memory of Emeritus Professor Peter Leggat to support post graduate students studying public health and tropic medicine to attend the annual .  There are two grants available, one $1000 grant to assist with registration, travel and accommodation costs associated with attendance and the second $500 grant to assist with conference registration costs.

All students are able to become members of the Australasian College of Tropical Medicine free of charge.

The value of the grant is $1,000 for conference & travel or $500 for conference registration paid in one lump sum after awarding of the grant.

Applications must be submitted on the official application form no later than the date set by the Selection Committee for the year in which the award is to be made. Applicants must submit with the official form, where appropriate:

The applicant authorises the Selection Committee to make such enquires as to the applicant's good character and suitability to receive the scholarship, which includes authorization for the Selection Committee to examine the applicant's academic record, and seek opinions from relevant members of the academic staff of this University or any other academic institution.

Your application is checked for completeness and eligibility, and you will receive an email confirmation it has been received. After the closing date it will be individually assessed and put forward to a selection committee who will rank your application against others who have applied. Applicants may be required to attend an interview as part of the selection process.

The Selection Criteria are:

  • Academic merit (20%)
  • Statement of reason to attend (80%)

Application Procedures

Selection Process

The award of the grant will be made in the absolute discretion of the Selection Committee, which shall comprise:

  • Prof Richard Franklin, Promotional Chair, PHTM - Public Health & Aeromedical Retrieval (Chair),
  • Head, Public Health and Tropical Medicine or nominee, and
  • Other members as suggested by Chair.

The Selection Committee will determine all matters relating to the selection of the Grant awardee.

Conditions of the Grant

    Successful applicants will:

    • be expected to attend the Prof Peter Leggat Memorial Oration at the conference.
    • need to submit a 250-500 word reflection of the conference that can be included in communications including newsletter, website.  Also, required to submit a photo/s with submission.
  • A student may lodge a request for review of decision in accordance with the provisions of the Student Appeals Policy.

Administration of the Grant

The grant shall be administered by the scholarships office, on behalf of the Selection Committee.

The funds of the grant shall be held in an account in the name of the University and shall be administered by the officer of the University charged with administering the scholarship.

Where an award provides some benefit to the recipient from a body external to the University, or an obligation upon a body external to the University, the University, its servants and agents, shall not be liable for that benefit or obligation.
